Private Cloud vs. Public Cloud–Does it really matter?

By Kurt Duesterdick, Solutions Engineer at Virtacore

Ask anyone today for their definition of what “the cloud” is and you will surely get many definitions. Now, try asking them to differentiate between public versus private cloud and you will see heads spinning.

As cloud computing matures and evolves, the public versus private cloud definitions are moving toward two flavors of cloud: commodity and enterprise cloud providers. So what’s the difference and which one would fit your needs best?

The Commodity Cloud

Commodity cloud providers provide a “one-size-fits-all” low-cost cloud solution in a multi-tenant environment. This may be a reasonable solution for some startups where you can just swipe your credit card and get started. It’s quick and easy. But when the growth happens, these startups quickly realize that these commodity based public clouds are just too costly and too complex to manage on their own.

Commodity cloud providers are able to provide such low costs to their customers because they cut their costs somewhere else like on high development hardware they use and the limited support they provide. This type of cloud is ideal for the companies who have certified technical engineers who are able to deploy and manage cloud technology with little support from the host.

But for the rest of us that are still wrapping our heads around the mantra of the “cloud,” we probably don’t have the resources and training at our finger tips. And that’s where the enterprise cloud comes in.

The Enterprise Cloud

Enterprise cloud providers offer a white-glove support package that includes 24×7 access to network engineers and virtualization experts that will hold your hand and help guide you in managing your cloud on-demand and in real-time. They will help customize a cloud solution that will answer your company’s specific needs providing you with the utmost, comprehensive IaaS solution.
