Last month, a team of systems engineers from Virtacore jetted over to Chicago to join more than 2,200 attendees at VeeamON 2018. The team brought back news on product announcements, tips from educational sessions, and market updates from Veeam, one of Virtacore’s primary partners.
Hyper Availability Platform
A large focus of the conference was on Veeam’s move from being an “Always On” platform to a “Hyper Availability” Platform. In today’s digital economy, enterprisescannot afford any downtime whatsoever from cyber attacks, natural disasters, or system outages, due to loss of revenue and damage to their reputation. To accomplish hyper availability, Veeam’s products are moving towards intelligent/behavior-based systems. An example was used of a company whose systems would proactively failover to another site based on forecasts of an impending hurricane.
A new capability being rolled out is Veeam DataLabs, which has replaced Veeam’sVirtual Labs. DataLabs allows Veeam customers and cloud service providers to test, audit, and simulate their backup/restore procedures in a sandbox environment so backups don’t affect production. They can be run from either a backup file, replicated VM or even run in a storage snapshot, each of which have their own I/O performance. Veeam DataLabs is available to Virtacore customers who use Veeam Cloud Connect.
Veeam Backup for Office 365
Veeam Backup for Office 365 is one of Veeam’s most rapidly growing offerings. There is a lot of demand from businesses for backing up their Office 365 data like SharePoint, Exchange, and OneDrive for Business. At the conference,Veeam announced new capabilities that will be available with version 2 to create backups for these two Office programs. Changes were also made to ease-of-use and the job wizard.
The Elephant in the Room
Ransomware, aka The Elephant in the Room was a major theme of the conference. The number of ransomware threats has skyrocketed in the last year. Veeam recommends using their 3-2-1 rule to protect data which we wrote about in a previous blog post.
At VeeamON 2018, we learned a lot, reconnected with old friends, and will definitely be back next year. Thank you Veeam for another great conference.
