As cloud matures and adoption increases at an increasing rate, disaster recovery (DR) is also now beginning to enter the 21st century. Options that were not available a few years ago are now very real possibilities for IT managers and directors.
Traditional disaster recovery solutions are complex and were often difficult to set up and manage. In contrast, today’s cloud-based DR solutions are easy to deploy, far less expensive to initiate and provide a range of options and levels of disaster recovery for small, medium and large organizations. This is a far cry from the days of driving home with your backup tapes in the seat beside you.
VMware Virtualization along with converged SANs – like Nimble Storage and StorageCraft – have allowed companies to utilize cloud-based DR solutions in ways that were almost unheard of just a few years ago. One size certainly does not fit all when it comes to DR. For some, moving key applications and servers to the cloud are enough, while others may want the peace of mind of a full failover solution where downtime needs to be as short as possible during disaster events.
Many companies can see the benefits of taking their entire network infrastructures to the cloud knowing their applications are protected in N+1 configurations. Whatever your preference, it is important to start re-thinking what disaster recovery means to your organization. IT managers and directors no longer have the luxury to take a “wait and see approach.”
